Dirty Projectors
Dirty Projectors’ albums have never coddled listeners with easy or obvious pleasures, but that hasn’t stopped the Brooklyn, NY band from being embraced by indie-rock fans longing for a more imaginative style of music. With the 2009 release of Bitte Orca, the band continues to refine its blend of pop, rock and experimental genres. David Longstreth’s spiraling guitar figure on “Stillness is the Move” suggests Tuareg desert blues, but the vocals of Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian and Haley Dekle almost sound like ’90s girl group R&B.
Refashioning a lesser-known Bob Dylan gem isn’t an obvious choice for this band, but Longstreth shares with Dylan a spirit of restless reinvention. Dylan thrilled and confounded with each new stylistic direction he took, and redefined what was considered “good” singing in the process. With each album he risked leaving some listeners behind, but those with a sense of daring knew to trust his steady hand.
So after the florid psychedelic lyricism of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan and on through his rootsy rocking and ambitious double-album masterpiece Blonde on Blonde Dylan responded with the spare John Wesley Harding in 1967. “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” is a simple production, just Dylan’s voice, guitar and some light drums. But, the song’s cryptic lyrics, mysterious and concise, fit neatly within the little mysteries that Longstreth has created with Dirty Projectors’ catalog.
